Mr. Martin's Grade 10 Writing Relay

The premise was so simple. Why hadn't I thought of it? While brainstorming ideas with the class on how we could implement blogging as a regular part of our curriculum. Many of my students came up with great ideas but one stood out. It came from the devious brains of Brad and Scott (blogging sensations and conventions lunatics):

"An activity that we feel would be a good way to interact with Corey Charron is a class story. It is basically a story written by the entire class with Corey. He would start the class off with the opening paragraph of the story, and then the class will be divided into small groups. Each group will contribute a piece to the story. The first group will read what corey has written, and add on their own piece of the story, following the story line that Corey has laid out for them. After the first group has added their part of the story, the next group will read what was written and add on to it. The story will continue to progress until the class decides it is time for Corey to write the ending of the story."

Now, there are a few ways we could set this up. I want all class members forming small groups and they will submit an idea in the "comments" section. Then we will decide which submission we will take to add to the story.

Submitted today, here is the first paragrph (written by Corey) of our writing relay, titled:

The Rains

It had been raining for as long as anyone could remember. When the rains started, it was said, the water had come down in sheets, and houses floated away and some people disappeared. Some had believed it was the coming of another flood, but after four days and four nights the rain tapered down to a steady drizzle. Then some, and not just the "Saved" and the "Born Againers", said it was going to be something even worse – hell on earth, the end of days, perhaps. Others said it was just going to go on raining forever.
...

Now, the objective will be for the Grade 10's to add onto this stellar intro. We will do this in groups and perhaps take the story in a few different directions. We will begin this process this coming week. Any comments? Suggestions? "The Rains" is waiting for you!

Class submissions will be linked to google docs feel free to comment/encourage their progress!

" Do you want to go for something funny, scary, thoughtful, moving, ridiculous, absurd, romantic and all lovey dovey (no way, dude), action-packed? Let me know.

Roger and out.

Thoughtful, Scary, absurd, whatever you're feeling is pretty much fine with me ;)

It doesn't matter, it's up to you what you want to choose. I am sure anything you create is going to be a good base to work off of. This should be interesting in my opinion.

I agree with Aaron. This story should be very interesting. With so many brains all contributing to one story, the possibilities are endless, man. The story may change in mood from time to time though. Some people, like myself, want action and violence in a story. However, other people are going to want a serious, moving drama type story. This is going to make the story very interesting. The story is going to make many shifts in genre.

I totaly agree with Scott, this is going to be extremely interesting, but I have a question for Mr. Martin, how are the groups going to devided? Is there going to be a action group, comedy etc..
eg: Say some people like comedy or horror, are they going to be in the same group? I just need to clear this up.

It's good to hear you are stoked to get this writing started. Well don't let a little detail like "group formation" stop you! If you and Scott are ready to roll, feel free to pair up and bounce some ideas around! Corey has laid out an introduction which can go in MANY directions!

Start us off with some kind of character introduction, whatever you want...it could be a Mad Max / Post-apocalyptic storyline where you have groups fighting over some kind of resource! It could be prime for some four-wheeler driving yahoos from Barnaby River!

You are only limited in your own imagination, take it...start a storyline, we'll either jump on board or take it in a different direction! This is ALL YOU. I will not limit your creativity. If you write an entire story, we'll post it!

Write. Re-write. Have fun.

Alright, thanks for helping me come up with the answer to that irritating question. Scott and I don't have any ideas as to where we are going to go with this paragraph yet, but on Monday once we get brainstorming, something will pop into our minds. I think I am kind of leaning towards comedy, but I am not sure. Anyways like I said, whatever becomes of this is going to be interesting.

P.S. I know I SPELLED divided wrong, but you got to admit I am getting better spelling wise.

In think that the story should be serious or, some kind of adventure because of the way corey started the story. However thats just my openion.

Personally, I want to do something sadistically ironic. With a subject as broad as "rains" you can kick the ball any way you want, and that leaves me with the desire to symbolize any kind of metaphorical subliminal message I want. I would like to do something huge, filled with backed up data and realism, which captivates readers and ensnares the unsuspecting relay partner.
Peace out. Fight the man. Word.
